The short answer

Do not multiply the label watts by 24 hours; a fridge cycles. Use the yellow EnergyGuide label's kWh-per-year figure divided by 365, or measure for three or more days with a plug-in meter, then multiply by your rate.

Why the label misleads

The rating plate on a fridge gives the current or watts drawn while the compressor is running. The compressor runs only part of each hour, and defrost heaters add short bursts, so the steady-state arithmetic in the calculator overstates a fridge badly. Two honest inputs exist: the annual kWh printed on the EnergyGuide label (a standardised test, not your kitchen), or a measurement taken in your kitchen.

Basis: Round-number illustrations. The first row is what someone gets by wrongly treating the label watts as continuous; the others use an annual kWh figure converted to a daily average, the way an EnergyGuide value would be used. No row is a measurement of a specific model.

The wrong method is several times the honest ones, which is how a fridge ends up wrongly blamed for a bill jump.

Measuring your fridge

A plug-in meter between the fridge and the wall records the real cycling. Leave it at least three full days so defrost cycles and door openings are included, then put the kWh and days into the calculator's meter mode. Both the meter's manual and the fridge's manual must permit the connection; the P4460 manual states a 15 A, 1,875 W limit, which an ordinary domestic fridge is within, but check your own fridge's label. Never let a measurement setup risk food storage: if the meter is unplugged or trips, the fridge is off.

No scheduling or smart-plug switching for a fridge

A smart plug can monitor a fridge; it must never be scheduled to switch one off. The monitor guide covers which device suits which job.

What actually lowers a fridge's use

  • Keep condenser coils clear and the door seals intact; a seal that will not hold a sheet of paper is leaking cold air.
  • Give it airspace and keep it out of direct sun or next to the range.
  • Set 37–40°F in the fridge and 0°F in the freezer, and check with a thermometer rather than the dial.
  • A second fridge in a hot garage is often the biggest single opportunity; measure it before deciding.

For a fridge measurement the retained total matters: if anyone unplugs the meter for a moment, a P4400 loses the count. The P4460 keeps it.

What we are relying on

Energy cost for a steady load = watts ÷ 1,000 × hours per day × days × your rate in dollars per kWh.
Arithmetic method, not a measurement. Appliances that cycle on and off need measured kWh or actual runtime, not nameplate watts × 24 hours.
The P4460 manual specifies measurement ranges up to 125 V rms, 15 A rms and 1,875 W and restricts use in wet locations. The unit label states the maximum ratings.
